February 6, 1945 – May 11, 1981
Not only a famed musician but also a political and social activist, it was at the height of Bob Marley’s career that he lost his fight with cancer at the age of 36. Bob Marley was awarded the United Nations’ Medal of Peace and a month before his death he was “…awarded Jamaica’s Order Of Merit, the nation’s third highest honour, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the country’s culture.” [1]
According to the official site for Bob Marley, “On Thursday May 21, 1981, the Hon. Robert Nesta Marley O.M. was given an official funeral by the people of Jamaica. Following the service – attended by both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition – Marley’s body was taken to his birthplace at Nine Mile, on the north of the island, where it now rests in a mausoleum.” [2]
Bob Marley’s music transcends generations still to this day. It does make you think about what we would have seen from him either musically, politically or socially, had we not lost his talents so early.
