December 18, 1886 – July 17, 1961
While his nickname was “The Georgia Peach,” Ty Cobb is not an endearing baseball legend. It is said that “[i]nstead of having friends and family at his side, a handgun and a fortune in stock certificates were on the nightstand next to his hospital bed. Only three former baseball colleagues attended his funeral and there was no national mourning.”1 Mr. Cobb is said to have amassed his fortune from stock investments in such companies as General Motors and Coca-Cola.2
Mr. Cobb’s temper is well-known but so are the baseball records he still holds to this day. Even 83 years after his last game, Cobb still holds the highest lifetime batting average of .367. Mr. Cobb died 50 years ago today at the age of 74.
