September 5, 1946 – November 24, 1991

It has been over 20 years since the face of the band Queen, Freddie Mercury, passed away at the age of 45. Mercury was born in Zanzibar and ultimately moved to England in 1964 to flee the Zanzibar Revolution. In 1970, Queen was formed. Mercury worked with the band up until the last year of his life.

Freddie Mercury passed away from bronchopneumonia resulting from AIDS. It was only the day before Mercury’s death that he finally announced to the public that he had AIDS. Mercury left a large estate that went to his friends and family and to further AIDS research.1

Mercury was a great performer, whose life and music still captures so many today. A recent book published, Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender, is now on shelves containing numerous photos of the entertainer. There is also a documentary out and a movie under production, starring Sacha Baron Cohen, about Mercury’s life.2

Here is an article from last year on the 20th anniversary of Mercury’s death – Remember Freddie Mercury: On the 20th Anniversary of His Death, 7 Iconic Moments.
