Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje in the Balkans. Mother Teresa pursued her life as a missionary at the age of 18 when she entered into the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was in 1937 that Mother Teresa, then Sister Teresa, “…made her Final Profession of Vows, becoming, as she said, ‘the spouse of Jesus’ for ‘all eternity.'”1 She then become Mother Teresa or Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

It has been 15 years since Mother Teresa died. The anniversary of her death is being celebrated throughout the world as she is an international icon for humanitarian work. Click here for photos from some events. Having spent her life serving others, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, 2 and in 2003, she was beatified by Pope John Paul II.3
